Challenge
A South American Paper Mill was forced to provide non-stop, calibrated tracking of influent to meet governmental compliance targets. They were forced to re-design this large diameter system to accommodate the new requirements. Their design options were narrowed to the following choice:
Create redundant piping systems with redundant flow meters that could be removed annually for mandated calibrations.
They faced the following one time costs to comply:
- $35,000 for additional 36" Mag Meter
- $45,000 for bypass line, flanges and isolation valves
They faced the following annual costs to comply:
- $15,000 for offsite calibration
- $10,000 manpower and crane time for removal, shipping costs and re-installation.
SONARtrac Solution
CiDRA dramatically reduced the capital for the Chilean team by creating the following solution:
- Mount a redundant precalibrated SONARtrac sensor head on the influent line.
- Rotate the bands annually to meet the calibration mandates.
The team eliminated the need for the one-time costs of the bypass line and valves and the annual costs required for removal and re-installation. Since the SONARtrac sensor heads arrive pre-calibrated, the annual costs of calibration were dramatically reduced as well. In the end, the CiDRA solution saved the mill $45,000 in additional up front capital and over $15,000 in annual, recurring calibration costs.
