Challenge
Can you imagine the capability to know the amount of water coming out of the former….out of the press? The paper industry has long sought a reliable method to manage dewatering in the former and press section. Real-time monitoring and control of these dewatering devices will provide the papermaker with tools to influence break time by managing draws, formation, clothing design and clothing cleaning. The problem- finding a measurement technique that accurately and repeatability depicts heavily aerated water flows leaving a vacuum separator or collection pan. Until now, this has been impossible.
Some have tried to create a flow measurement by installing capital-intensive piping arrangements designed to feed a steady flow to mag meters. Even then, the variable air content has made accurate, repeatable data impossible to achieve.
Imagine no longer being forced to infer couch solids, press solids, wire performance or felt permeability through perms and vacuums, an inference that can lead to bad decisions. Is it compaction? Is it plugging? Does that matter? Can the water be removed or not? When to wash? When and where is the machine removing water? Can the process get more and is it possible to shift to change paper properties?

SONARtrac Solution
CiDRA expanded the combined capabilities of the submersible gas holdup meter and the GVF/VF combination flow-gas volume sensors to provide the user with a monitoring system suitable for seal legs. The solution eliminates the need for making dramatic changes to the seal leg piping (risk to vacuum system performance, capital intensive) while providing accurate mass flow of water out of the separators or collection pans. Think of what would it mean to your financial performance if you could see and control……
- Couch Roll Flow
- Forming Roll Flows
- Former Vacuum Element Flows
